Well, the title says it's a Volkswagen Beetle, but when I was growing up, we called the fantastic plastic creations dune buggies. Clearly built for nothing other than fun in the sun, it's nimble, fast, and perhaps the greatest method this side of a Ferrari for attracting attention on the road. No matter who you are, you can't help but have fun driving this thing. These were sold as kits to convert your Beetle, and some were definitely better than others. This one is a Corsair, which is one of the better setups and inspired by the original Myers Manx. Just lift off your Beetle's body and bolt down the 1-piece fiberglass tub, attach a few necessities like a windshield and headlights, and go have some fun. Swathed in burgundy metallic paint, this one has the perfect '60s vibe without being too psychedelic, so it works today as well as it did decades ago. The underside of the body has been coated in durable undercoating material, so go out and tear up some sand and gravel without worries. This wasn't about show, it was about fun on a budget, and that's still true today. The chrome headlights give it a happy, bug-eyed look, and the round taillights look like Impala pieces with a little extra trim, but who knows for sure? The interior is minimalist, but someone spent a lot of time on making it look nice. The black buckets are neatly stitched with vertical pleats, and there's a matching bench in back so you can take your buddies with you. Coated floors mean that you don't have to worry about soggy carpets or sand on your feet when you jump in, and the revised dash carries the original VW instruments as well as a compass and inclinometer up near the windshield. Windows? Heater? Radio? Forget it, this is a machine for sunny days, not commuting, although you'll look forward to the drive home if this is sitting out in the office parking lot tomorrow night. And if you do happen to get caught in the rain or the sun starts getting too hot, there is an easy-to-install bikini top that fits the car's attitude perfectly. With considerably less weight to haul around, the 1600 cc VW flat-four moves it with gusto. The driving position gives you great sight lines in every direction, so you'll dodge through traffic like you're in a go-cart and when the terrain gets rough, the lifted suspension gives you plenty of clearance. Since it's hanging out there for everyone to see, the engine got a healthy dose of chrome and a custom exhaust that moves the pipes up high. The transmission, brakes and steering are typical VW reliable and more than adequate for the lightweight dune buggy body. And thanks to the compact size, those 15-inch aluminum wheels look positively giant, especially wearing fat 245/60/15 Goodyears. This VW is every bit as fun as it looks, and it'll go just about anywhere the sun can shine. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom.
