In 1990, Mercedes-Benz proposed a plan to replace the G-Class, which at the time had been in production for 11 years. A joint agreement with Mitsubishi Motors to develop and produce a sports-utility vehicle was made in early 1991 and was confirmed publicly in June of that year. Plans were made to base it off the Montero/Pajero platform with one of them being badged as a Mercedes-Benz and the other a Mitsubishi. In May 1992, these plans were abandoned citing 'technical problems' and Mercedes-Benz continued on with in-house development. Prototype testing took place from 1994 to late 1996 in various climates and regions of the world. New features in the 2006 M-Class include the 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission, optional Active Curve-Illuminating Bi-Xenon headlights which 'steer' in the path of the vehicle and an adjustable height air suspension. Permanent 4Matic four-wheel drive remained with one-speed transfer case (no low range), center limited-slip differential and four-wheel electronic traction system.
This one owner ML 420 CDi was first registered on 23rd January 2007 and has been meticulously maintained by the supply dealer ever since; the last service being carried out some 1,200 miles ago in December 2012. Few 4x4 vehicles drive like a saloon car and the luxurious specification and equipment define this as being one of the finest available. Electric seats with memory, 7G-tronic automatic gearbox, parking aids with reversing camera, 19" alloys, command package and side steps make this a highly versatile Mercedes-Benz. Finished in silver with black interior and supplied with a V5 registration document, a full year's MoT test certificate and offered at no reserve; this is one to watch.
