1994 Porsche 964 Speedster VIN: WPOCB2965RS465336, Engine no. 62P05625 Grand Prix White with Grey Leather There were two very distinct incarnations of the 964 Speedster. The first being the 1989 model year Speedster. Shown at the 1988 Frankfurt auto show beside the upcoming Carrera 4, the 1989 Speedster actually shared more in common with the 930 turbo than with the upcoming 964 generation 911s, causing it to be looked upon, in retrospect, as a much inferior "driver's car" to the later 1994 Speedster. The 1994 version of the 964 Speedster is exceedingly rare, with just 427 examples having been delivered to the US marketplace. Unlike the 1989 model, the 1994 Speedster was based on the new Carrera 2 platform and was designed to be a more focused "driver's car" and served as a hybrid between a 964 Carrera 2 Cabriolet and a 964 RS. It featured a softer suspension set up than the 964 RS, it offered select creature comforts of a normal 964 Carrera 2 Cabriolet such as power windows, air conditioning, and a stereo. Although little known- perhaps for their rarity- the 1994 Speedster walks a wonderful line between performance and comfort, a combination which lends itself well to everyday use. Produced in June of 1993 as a 1994 year model, this particular example is a two-owner Bay Area California car from new, delivered in Oakland, California. It was optioned with a radio cassette player (included), air conditioning with full climate control, painted wheels with crest in rim cap, and black Porsche floor mats. Today, the car is best described as a very clean, enthusiast owned, no-excuses driver. The car shows beautifully, with very good paintwork over a straight, unmarked body. The body color painted wheels are in very good condition, as are windows, lenses, badges, and black trim pieces. The interior is also in very good original condition, with just minor wear showing on the driver's bolster, inevitable from ingress and egress given the competition shape of the seats. The engine bay, front storage area, and undercarriage are all in very good, unaltered condition, and representative of a well cared for 50,000 mile road car. This Speedster starts easily and runs strong with good power, a responsive suspension feel, and excellent brakes. It is current on its service, with the full 30,000 mile service having been performed at Sonnen Porsche in March of 2003, with 31,946 miles logged. Most recently, in November of 2011, at 49,500 miles, Sonnen Porsche performed a minor service and multi-point inspection. The tires were found to have more than 7/32" of tread remaining, the front brakes 90% remaining, and the rear brakes 60% remaining. The oil was changed and a new filter installed. Other records on file outline regular service, repairs, and enhancements such as the installation of a battery tender, new gas hood struts, and a new radio with CD player. Today the car has 51,600 miles from new. Included with the sale are records back to 2002 at which time this Speedster had just 30,000 miles, the Porsche issued certificate of authenticity, a car cover, a second key, the original cassette radio (replaced with a modern CD player) and radio remote control. The final model in a string of now iconic cars by Porsche, and one of just 427 examples delivered to the US marketplace, this clean, excuse-free, California car from new will surely appeal to the Porsche enthusiast looking for an eminently usable investment vehicle which is both practical and performance oriented.
