This 1949 Ford F1 is one of those neat old trucks that can do it all. Need a parts chaser? It's ready, because the satin black finish doesn't need a lot of fussing. Like to drive? A sweet-running 327 and a 5-speed manual make it a pleasure. And if you just like the vintage look, it has a blue-collar vibe that is ultra-cool, so it will also feel right at home at the next cruise night. Straight out of the '50s, this this one re-creates the look of a budget build (but it's not) and might be more akin to what a hot rod shop might have used to chase parts decades ago, and what a lot of guys call a "rat rod" today (even though I know the guy who built this one hates the term). The sheetmetal is straight, but not perfect, so you won't ever worry about it when you're on the road. Satin black paint needs exactly zero maintenance and conveys its own set of rules, especially when paired with a simple red pinstripe. It's as if the truck is saying it doesn't care about fashion, it's just cool all by itself. The bed is full of refinished timbers that almost look too nice, and all the chrome and stainless is quite well preserved, so this is anything but a refugee from the junkyard. Admit it, this is how you would have done it yourself. Inside, it's back to the '40s with the original bench seat, rubber floor mats, and lots of originality. The dash was given the same satin black finish as the bodywork, but the bright cream plastic pieces look extremely good for being original. The factory instruments are still in place, augmented by a set of smaller gauges under the dash, all keeping an eye on the warmed over small block under the hood. With a fresh seat cover, the bench is in great shape, firm and comfortable and not fussy, so you can get in with your work jeans on. The only option is a heater, which is always nice on a truck where even that was an option. Even original style fiber-board headliner and side panels were reinstalled-after all, we're not farmers anymore. The engine is a 327 cubic inch Chevy, the engine of choice in the early '60s when this truck might have still been in regular service. It's neatly dressed with a few chrome bits, but function was definitely high on the priorities list, and in that regard, this truck has definitely succeeded. It starts quickly, idles nicely thanks to a brand new Edelbrock carb and intake, and zips around with an authoritative sound from the exhaust. Front disc brakes were added for safety, and the original suspension shows some upgrades for road-worthiness, but none of the truck's inherent goodness was lost in the conversion. And simply nothing looks better with satin black paint than red steelies with original hubcaps and trim rings, all wrapped in L78-15 whitewalls. Fans of the traditional build, this is a great truck.
