Porsche 356 A coupé T2
British registration Engine Type 616/15 - n° 710369 - Interesting model - Rare front bench seat - Superb colours - No reserve On 12 May 1956, Porsche celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of Porsche GmbH, founded in May 1931, and the 100,000th Porsche to be built: a 356A. This model, which succeeded the 356 in October 1955, still had the monocoque steel body. The front suspension comprised 2 square torsion bars laterally along the chassis, and a round torsion bar on each side at the rear. The suspension was a little softer than on the 356. The new wheels had a 15-inch diameter. Five different engines were available : 1300, 1300S, 1600, 1600S and 1500GS. They were all air-cooled with lightweight alloy crankcases, cylinder heads and pistons. A type 644 gearbox was adapted for the car, with synchromesh gears, and it had a dry single plate clutch. A type 716 gearbox appeared in 1958. The Porsche 356A had a new " panoramic " windscreen and a dashboard displaying three large dials. At the Frankfurt Motor Show, the 1957 356 A model was exhibited with various improvements. It had a ZF steering box, and the exhaust, to increase ground clearance, exited through the bumpers. Centre lock chrome wheels were available as an option. The rear window became larger and more rounded. Presented in black with caramel interior, the Porsche 356 A on offer is a T2 coupé. Since buying the car in 2007, the current owner has hardly used it. It has been garaged next to a collection of Rolls-Royces and a more recent Porsche 911. The engine in this 356 A is a 1600 cc type 616/15, the same as in the 356 Cs in 1964 -1965. It produces 75 bhp, giving this 356 A more power than the original engine would have done. On inspection of the car, it was noted that it has benefitted from restoration some 15 years ago. The underbody will require work to restore this desirable car to an immaculate condition. Moreover, this coupé includes a very rare feature : a front bench seat, available as an option on the 356. Approximately 250 examples were built with this option, across all of the 356 models. Rare in period, the passing of time has made this example a true collector's item. Beautifully presented, this 356 A represents a great opportunity to buy one of the earliest versions of a car that now has legendary status, in a body that retains the purity of the original design.
