Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III Standard Steel Saloon
French title - Excellent provenance - English luxury - Thorough restoration 15 years ago Already in 1950, it was clear to the Rolls-Royce engineers that their six-cylinder engine was approaching the end of its career. Designed in 1938, this straight six had the difficult task of powering heavier and heavier saloons. It wasn't possible to extract more power and continue to meet the exacting standards required by Rolls-Royce and Bentley for the smooth and quiet running of the car. The engineering team, led by Harry Grylls, therefore had to design and build a new type of engine. Noone knew that this engine (and its derivatives) would still be built in 1995, or that it would be the last engine designed for the prestigious marque, as BMW was later chosen to power the 12-cylinder Rolls-Royce and Bentleys. The Silver Cloud III was presented in October 1962. The car on offer has been very carefully maintained. The previous owner, Mr Toulet carried out a thorough restoration and then sold it to the current owner in 1999. We went to inspect the car at his property in Sologne, where he used it for trips out in the local area. Three years ago, it was garaged alongside the Mercedes Benz 300 SL Roadster and the Bentley Speed Six that we sold at the Le Mans Classic sale in 2010 for prices that were well above estimate, due to their remarkable condition. The provenance of this car is therefore excellent ! During examination of this automobile, the most prestigious saloon of its day, we were able to ascertain that the majority of elements we could see on the car have been refurbished. This includes the electrical components, the body, the splendid interior in natural leather, and the wood panelling. This is a beautiful example of the marque's flagship model, and very sought-after in this condition.
