The Caprice was Chevy's top-of-the-line model, available only as a 2-door or 4-door hardtop in 1969. This particular triple black hardtop is a 3-owner car with a rumbling 300 horsepower V8, ably demonstrating that Chevy wasn't giving up on luxury/performance cars in the days before the Monte Carlo. Tuxedo Black is this car's original color, and it's a fitting name. This is a full-sized luxury coupe that looks like an all-pro linebacker in formal attire. It's big, make no mistake, but it also has style and great proportions that make it a commanding presence on the road. The black paint was applied a few years ago and although not a show car, she's certainly a great driver. Optional hidden headlights and a padded roof add to the formal look, while long body side moldings add to the illusion of length. Chrome and trim is all in place, sparkling brightly against the inky black paint, along with CHEVROLET block letters proudly displayed on the hood. Trademark triple taillights are borrowed from the Impala, but as the new king of the hill, the Caprice has earned the right to wear them. The opulently appointed black bucket seat interior is a high-style luxury apartment that's perfect for long-distance cruises. It appears that most of the interior appointments are original, and as such it's amazingly well-preserved. The seats show very little wear, the door panels don't even reveal where someone might have been resting an elbow, and the dash hasn't been abused by the sun (although it's so nice you almost wonder if that piece was one of the few to actually be replaced). A center console features the famous horseshoe shifter, a very rare option in the luxury-oriented Caprice, and all the faux woodwork looks great against the black upholstery. Factory A/C has been converted to R134a refrigerant for easy maintenance, and there's a newer AM/FM radio in the dash complementing the original 8-track player atop the console. This was definitely cutting edge entertainment in 1969 and a cool relic today. The gargantuan trunk is big enough to rent out as an apartment in New York City, and includes a correct mat and full-sized spare tire waaaaay up there in the front. The engine is the optional 300-horsepower L48 350, which was actually 35 more horsepower than the larger 396. Recently detailed, it wears correct Chevy Orange paint on the block, heads and all its original equipment. The stock air cleaner has also been restored, and thanks to a freshened carburetor and ignition system, it starts instantly and idles beautifully. With 300 horsepower on tap and a quick-shifting TH350 3-speed automatic, this big Caprice is light on its feet and cruises effortlessly at supra-legal speeds. The chassis is incredibly clean and solid, although not restored for show, and the dual exhaust system offers an appropriately muscular sound without being hot-rod loud, which would just be unseemly in such a car. Correct 15-inch Rallys add to the sporting demeanor and wear 215/75/15 whitewall radials for just the right touch. Big, comfortable, unusual, and surprisingly fast, this Caprice is a very affordable way to be the star of the show. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom.
