For its triumphant final run in first-generation, solid rear-axle form, Corvette styling was significantly updated in 1961 with a smart new rear-end treatment predicting that of the upcoming Corvette Sting Ray, plus a revised and blacked-out grille design out front. Other refinements for 1962 included the elimination of two-tone exterior finishes. Less decorative and more purposeful in appearance, the final C1 edition was a hot seller when new and today, fine examples remain a perennial favorite. While it took until 1955 for Chevrolet’s revolutionary small-block V-8 to occupy the Corvette engine bay, a myriad of engine and powertrain combinations were available by 1962. The basic 327 cu. in V-8 offered a high 10.5:1 compression ratio, a four-barrel carburetor, and a no-maintenance hydraulic valvetrain to deliver a stout 250 bhp and startling all-around performance belying its relatively mild specifications. Comfort and convenience options were abundant, and exterior color choices now numbered seven distinctive hues. As always, the Corvette figured prominently on America’s road circuits in SCCA competition, with “The Flying Dentist” Dr. Dick Thompson taking the 1961 B-Production crown for 1961, followed by the A-Production title for 1962, confirming the Corvette’s growing competition prowess. The Corvette was particularly effective at the growing numbers of drag strips nationwide in Modified Sports and “Gasser” ranks, with “Big John” Mazmanian’s blown, Candy Red-painted C1 remaining unforgettable today. Having received a ground-up restoration with a book of photographs documenting the process, this 1962 Corvette features a powerful balanced and blueprinted 383 cubic-inch stroker, with many highly desirable upgrades including a pair of aluminum cylinder heads, a dual-quad intake system, and a full-roller valvetrain. An Edelbrock oval air cleaner and valve covers, Earl’s braided stainless-steel lines, and other polished items add further appeal to the engine bay. A four-speed transmission and 3.55:1 Positraction rear end handle the 383’s considerable power output. A rack-and-pinion steering box provides precise guidance, and front disc brakes ensure stopping power. Cosmetics received equal attention, with a striking Red exterior finish and matching hardtop, a Tan convertible top, and a luxurious Tan leather-trimmed interior. For those seeking a handsome and powerful classic C1 Corvette, this final-year example from 1962 is just the ticket. Offered at No Reserve, it is, simply put, a can’t miss opportunity at auction.
