1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was the epitome of this racing heritage. SL stood for ‘Sport Leicht’ or Sport Light and the Gullwing was successfully produced from 1954 until 1957. With a top speed of over 155 mph together with its striking looks the 300 SL Gullwing took the public, motoring press and the automotive community by storm.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster was launched at the 1957 Geneva Salon and Mercedes told the press. “The 300 SL Roadster is our response to the demand in many countries for a particularly fast, comfortable, open sports car. This automobile offers a wide range of technical achievements for even greater driving safety and motoring comfort as well as a high standard of practical everyday value for touring in real style.”
Mercedes may well have been accused of being somewhat conservative in their appraisal of their new car. The Roadster would match the Gullwing’s 155 mph making it one of the fastest road cars in the world. In addition, a redesigned rear suspension layout made the car’s handling inherently superior to its predecessor.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster remains, today, a stunningly beautiful supercar. With superlative handling and blinding looks this car would grace any collection and yet remains a practical, sporting, road car.
Our car was supplied new via Messrs O’Flaherty of Dublin the official concessionaires for the Republic of Ireland. The Roadster was first registered here in the UK the following year to W.M Douglas of the Isle of Wight who kept the car for some 13yrs. The car then passed to Sir Ralph Regnault Millais who only retained ownership for twelve months. In October of 1973 the car was then acquired by Mr Tom Walduck of Hatfield who was the custodian for some 38 years until it was purchased by the previous owner; so the entire ownership in some 56 years of this magnificent roadster only totals only 4

During the time of custodianship by the previous owner this magnificent 300SL has been very well maintained by leading marque specialist Kevin O’Keeffe. Works include a complete rebuild to both engine & rear axle assemblies, the fitment of a new clutch & fuel tank & sundry works to the electrics, brakes & exhaust system. The history file contains invoices totalling in excess of £35,000.00 within the last 12 months.
Accompanying our car are varies historical documents, to include:

• Original Green Log Book
• Old MOTs dating back to 1973
• Original Road Test report; Road & Track, 1961
• Republished original handbook
• Original “Technical Tips” produced by Gullwing Group
