Project 500 MKIII Jet-Car. The ultimate boys toy!!
1974 Project 500 Jet-Car MKIII (C5B-08).
Built to contest the Australian Land Speed Record. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Derwent jet engine with a custom designed afterburner. This combination produced 2750lbs of thrust and 4125lbs of thrust when the afterburner was engaged. Braking was assisted by two specially designed slotted parachutes fitted into the ejection tubes located at the rear of the fuselage. Project 500 was wind tunnel tested 830 kph (500 mph) during the design phase. A test run on Lake Hindmarsh in northern Victoria in 1974 achived 640 kph! Unfortunately due to unseasonal rainn the reccord attempt on lake Eyre could not take place.
