About this Car:
When production of the legendary 365 GTB/4 Daytona ceased in 1973, Ferrari turned from the traditional front-engine V-12 layout, which had been the company standard for decades. 23 years later, Ferrari reintroduced the format with the debut of the 550 Maranello, which allowed the designers at Pininfarina to update the timeless long-nose, short-deck silhouette of the traditional front-engine coupe.
In 2002, Ferrari refined the 550 with the 575 M, which offered increased horsepower, larger brakes, and redesigned interior. Most notably, the updated model marked the first time Magneti Marelli’s electro-hydraulic “F1” gearbox was coupled with a V-12.
In 2005, an open-top 575 M variant was built in limited numbers and dubbed “Superamerica.” The car featured an ingeniously designed, retractable carbon fiber and glass roof panel that flips 180° rearward to lie flat atop the trunk lid. The glass features electrochromic technology, which enables an electrically controlled incremental transition between clear and nearly opaque. Increased rigidity for the open-top model is achieved through additional bracing of the side sills and A-pillars, and the bulkhead behind the cockpit and transaxle area have been strengthened and braced. Handling characteristics of the Superamerica were found to be nearly identical to those of the coupe via the computer- controlled suspension, while curb weight was increased by a mere 200 lbs.
In keeping with Enzo Ferrari’s belief that one fewer car should be built than the market demands, just 559 Superamericas were made, with only 170 equipped for sale in the US.
Finished in Rosso Corsa over beige leather, this 575 M Superamerica was sold by Ferrari of Beverly Hills in the final days of 2005 and has been retained in the collection of its first owner ever since. Registering just 165 total miles at the time of cataloguing, the Superamerica appears pristine in every way. The nearly new Superamerica is supplied with its manuals, tool kit, car cover, delivery papers, CARFAX report, and window sticker. Options include the F1 semiautomatic gearbox, Fiorano handling package with carbon-ceramic brakes, Daytona-style seats, and CD changer. The cockpit of the 575 M is spacious and inviting, and the trunk was built to accommodate a full set of golf clubs or a weekend’s worth of luggage.
The appearance of this virtually unused Superamerica at auction offers its next owner the opportunity to acquire a desirably optioned example of one of the most exquisitely designed open Ferraris of the Montezemolo Era – one that may rightfully take its place in the finest of modern sports car collections.
