Bugatti automobiles have always been known for their stunning looks, advanced engineering, and outstanding racing accomplishments. Italian-born company founder Ettore Bugatti came from a family of artists and prided himself on his dedication to automotive design and construction. He set up shop in Molsheim, Alsace, France, and produced cars that quickly earned a reputation for speed, agility, and style during the 1920s and 1930s. Bugattis won numerous high-profile races across Europe, including the first Monaco Grand Prix and two 24 Hours of Le Mans events. The cars were highly prized by the few lucky connoisseurs able to afford them. When Mr. Bugatti passed away in 1947, only 8,000 of his cars had been built. The marque was discontinued, but the name has lived on as one of the greatest automotive legends. Named in honor of French race car driver Pierre Veyron, who won the 1939 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Bugatti, the Veyron 16.4 is extraordinarily fast. The 16.4 refers to the number of cylinders and turbochargers; the Veyron 16.4 can attain speeds that could literally take it airborne, but for a remarkably aerodynamic design that keeps it grounded. It uses the same launch control technology found in Formula 1 racing cars to maintain maximum traction from first to seventh gear and up to top speed. While it might be assumed that such a car may not easily be stopped, Bugatti engineers claim the Veyron’s four-wheel, carbon-ceramic disc brakes actually slow it down faster than it accelerates. In less than five seconds, the Bugatti Veyron can go from 0 to 60 mph and back to a complete stop. Published reports list a 0 to 60 mph time of approximately 2.5 seconds and a quarter-mile time in the low 10-second range. The popular BBC show Top Gear named the Veyron “Car of the Decade” in their 2010 award show and proclaimed it “the greatest car ever made and the greatest car we will ever see in our lifetime.” The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 represents perfection in a sports car – a combination of unrestrained performance, bold design, and superior craftsmanship. This striking blue Veyron, no. 005, is the very car that Bugatti chose to display for the North American debut of the Veyron at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show. The car was purchased directly from the Los Angeles show stand by the current owner following a brief misunderstanding – that he did not wish to place an order for just any Veyron, but rather to take delivery of the very car in front of him. Accordingly, the sales contract was written on January 4, 2006, making 005 the first Veyron to be sold in North America. Following the show, 005 returned to Europe to fulfill its duties as the Geneva Auto Show car, and then back to the Bugatti factory for final preparations for retail delivery. This Veyron, the fifth of a 300-car production run, has been displayed with the consignor’s collection since new and was sent to Bugatti’s Oxnard, California, service center to receive periodic software updates, ensuring its compatibility with current Bugatti diagnostic equipment. Additionally, the car has recently been retrofitted with Bugatti’s rearview mirror-based navigation system, which became available in the years following this car’s construction. Showing just 94 total miles at the time of cataloguing, this Veyron is essentially a new car, even retaining its original tire and wheel setup from its show days. It should be noted that Bugatti recommends changing 005’s tires before use. Capable of being driven with ease in any situation, whether on the downtown streets of a metropolitan city or on Germany’s Ehra-Lessien straight at top speed, Bugatti’s limit-breaking Veyron is a truly magnificent automobile.
