About this Car:
Presented in virtually the same appearance in which it ran the Carrera Panamericana Revival in 1991, this fully race-prepared replica Jaguar C-Type was built on a Proteus (Lynx) chassis by Ten Tenths, the vintage race car company co-owned by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason.
The car utilizes a drivetrain taken from a 1962 Jaguar 3.4 Mk II saloon that Mason purchased from David Eidens of Guildford, UK, bearing registration SLW220F. That registration, along with the saloon’s identity plate, was transferred to the Proteus.
The Proteus C-Type replica is constructed on a steel tube-frame chassis with an alloy envelope body, faithfully replicating the original C-Type. Dave Butcher of DJB Performance prepared the Mk II’s already potent 3.4-litre twin-cam six, which was uprated with triple sidedraft Weber 45 DCOE carburetion. The engine drives through the Mk II’s four-speed, fully synchronized overdrive gearbox and rear axle.
Ten Tenths installed a substantial roll bar with an upper section that can be removed for street use. A pair of Sparco racing seats was fitted along with two pairs of four-point Willans racing belts, all of which remain with the car. The Terratria rally computer used in that event is also included. A large skid plate was mounted beneath the engine for protection during the Carrera Panamericana, as well as a fire suppression system and a modern fuel cell. Proper 72-spoke, Jaguar knock-off wire wheels with radial tires were installed, and a spare wheel and tire were stored in the tail section.
After the Carrera Panamericana, the car was sold and eventually made its way to the US, and was owned by Christopher Sloan of Atlanta, Georgia. This car has not been raced since the 1991 Carrera Panamericana, driven only for touring by Mr. Sloan over the past 10 years, showing 12,342 miles at the time of cataloguing. It is described by the consignor as being properly maintained and in excellent running condition. The engine currently shows strong and even compression readings of 145, 155, 145, 155, 145, and 145 lbs. Cosmetically, the car appears in its Carrera Panamericana livery, with all period decals in place. Although the interior bears the patina expected in a racing car that has been driven hard, the aluminum body and paint are described by the consignor as being in lovely condition with only a few small stone chips visible. Currently ready for road use, this car is sure to delight any Jaguar enthusiast with a taste for celebrity provenance.
