About this Car:
Few nameplates in automotive performance carry more weight than the Carrera, the Porsche variant named for the famously rugged Carrera Panamericana Mexican road race. More than just a model name, Carrera signified a particular race-bred version of Porsche’s classic flat-four engine devised by Dr. Ernst Fuhrmann, using twin ignition, two dual-throat carburetors, and, most importantly, four-cam valve actuation rather than single-cam pushrods.
At the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1961, Porsche introduced the latest version of the Carrera, wearing the T-6 Reutter body style and powered by an enlarged two-liter version of Furhmann’s four-cam flat four, designated Type 587/1. The fastest 356 road car ever built, the 2000 GS or Carrera 2 (so named for its two-liter displacement) was produced in a sparing quantity of just 436 examples, of which 310 were built on the earlier 356 B platform. A thoroughbred performer with a premium-trimmed interior, the Carrera 2 was also notable as the first production Porsche to feature disc brakes.
This sensational example of the rare Carrera 2 possesses all of its original body panels and benefits from a recent factory- correct restoration of the mechanical components and exterior. According to the Kardex, this Porsche was optioned with extensive sonderausfuhrung (special equipment), including black leather upholstery, a velour-lined glove compartment, an Eberspacher auxiliary gasoline heater, Hella 128 driving lamps, Hella accessory interior lamps, Coco floor mats, an unusual outside temperature thermometer, dual loudspeakers, Talbot mirrors, armrests, and a radio. The car also features disc brakes, a VDM wood-rimmed steering wheel, and the handsomely louvered rear apron with tailpipe valances that physically differentiates the high-performance 2000 GS from the base 356 B.
In the early 1980s, this Porsche was purchased from a South Carolina-based owner by Dr. Phillip Scheinberg of Santa Barbara, California, who used the car as a daily driver for 10 years before selling it to an owner in Texas.
