1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet
Chassis # 111.027-12-003206

With its reputation for solid and reliable automobiles established, Mercedes-Benz debuted a newly-styled convertible in September 1961, the 220SEb.

These well-built automobiles, referred to by many as the last of hand-built Mercedes, were never widely available.

The ultimate luxury Mercedes was created in 1969 when the 280SE 3.5 convertible was introduced.

This model has an iron block aluminum head V-8 used in the forthcoming 350SL.

The 280SE 3.5 is highly prized among Mercedes enthusiasts for its high level of luxury; the wood and the leather work are reminiscent of earlier hand-made cars, and the performance is also quite remarkable for a five-seater car, with a 0-60 mph in under 10 seconds, 200hp @ 5,800rpm and a top speed of 125 mph.

Only 1,232 genuine convertibles, such as the car presented here, were produced between 1969 and 1971.

Chassis 3206 was ordered new from Mercedes-Benz of Hollywood in the fall of 1970 by a woman in California who wanted a vehicle to match her existing 1969 6-cylinder 280SE Coupe. She took possession of the car 3 months later.

It remained in her possession until 1989 when she decided to give it to her son. He sold it 1998 to a well-known Hollywood executive, from whom we recently obtained the car.

Finished in Papyrus White DB 717 over blue Leather Interior (245) and blue top, the car retains its legendary original fragrant Roser Leather interior, in excellent and supple condition. Car was ordered as follows:

chassis number: 111 027 12 003206
engine number: 116 980 12 002832
transmission number: 001831

586 air conditioner / electric windows
595 heat insulated glass
641 white wall tires

Having covered just over 123,000 miles in 41 years, the car comes with all its original documentation, including owner’s and service manuals, data cards and a stack of service records, verifying the accuracy of the mileage, and proving the car received constant high-quality maintenance over the years.

We had the rare opportunity to speak at length with the original owner’s son recently who enthusiastically relayed the wonderful history of the car, and his mother’s love for it over the years. He confirmed the car was meticulously cared for and cherished.

Upon our inspection, we found the car to be extremely straight, original, rust-free and accident-free.

As we show in the pictures, the trunk floor, front fender wells and floor boards are flawless.

In our opinion, 3206 constitutes what we would qualify as a true survivor, with a great history and glamorous ties to Hollywood.

Car comes with all service records, owner’s manual and service booklet, original owner’s registration card set of both datacards etc.
