Little needs to be added about the meteoric rise and domination
of Porsche's flagship 911 - suffice to say that the combination of
understated styling, sound mechanics and often brutal performance
firmly secured its position within the automotive history books.
With generations of improvements adding to a heady concoction and
pushing further and further to provide the ultimate driving
experience, 1984 saw the launch of a replacement for the successful
SC series, the 3.2 Carrera, reviving the Carrera name for the first
time since 1977. This was indeed the last iteration in the original
911 series with all subsequent models featuring new body styling
with new brakes, electronics and suspension technologies. A new
higher-displacement motor, a 3.2-litre horizontally opposed flat
6-cylinder, was utilised. With the new engine, power was increased
to 207bhp. This version of the 911 accelerated from 0-60 mph
in 5.4 seconds and had a top speed of 150 mph as measured
by Autocar.
