1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS s/n 07834, Engine no. 0011920 Rosso Corsa with Tan Interior Named for Enzo Ferrari’s son, Alfredino, who had died in 1956 at the age of 24 as the result of muscular dystrophy, the Dino was, fittingly, a ‘baby’ Ferrari that was dimensionally smaller and more nimble than any other street Ferrari previously offered. Its mid-placed engine was a Ferrari first for a street car, while the quad cam V6 was a soulful engine that capitalized on Ferrari’s racing experience gained from building racing V6’s. Styling was of course by Pininfarina, and the Dino has long been a favorite among Ferrari enthusiasts thanks to its beautiful lines and proportions, lovely engine, and balanced chassis. This particular example, s/n 7834, is a late production North American Market model, sold new in classic Rosso Corsa with tan leather, and fitted with air conditioning, power windows, “Daytona” seats, and five Campagnolo wheels. It was assembled towards the end of January 1974, finished in February of 1974, delivered later that month through Hollywood Sports Cars in Beverly Hills, California. The original owner is unknown at this time, but the car was seen in 1981 when it was still in Beverly Hills, California, at the time showing just 23,000 miles. In August of 1982 it was seen at Overseas MotorSports in Costa Mesa, CA all features remained the same except interior color was now listed as being black- possibly only referencing the black “Daytona” seat inserts on the tan seats. In April of 1984, the car was listed by the FOC/FCA registries as being owned by John Schneider, still in California with plates 652LHH. Interior now recorded again as being tan. All other noted features remained the same as previously recorded. In March of 1990 it was inspected in Kansas City, Kansas all features remained the same and mileage surprisingly was still recorded as being 23,000. Shortly thereafter the car was sold to a private museum collection in Japan. It was well protected but seldom used and given no services while in storage and on display. The previous owners purchased this Dino and took delivery in August of 2012, and immediately embarked on a massive service and the installation of a new interior. This Dino GTS was formally entered in the 2012 Ferrari National meet, held from October 10th to the 14th, where the current owner acquired the car, recognizing the intrinsic beauty of 246 Dinos, and the high quality of recent work performed on this example. As would be expected, the car makes a very strong impression in the flesh. The new interior leather is virtually flaw-free and spotless. The carpets are essentially perfect. The dash has been recently recovered in a high quality material nearly identical to the original, no longer available “mouse hair”. The steering wheel is the original item, in original condition. The car has certainly been refinished, but remains its original Rosso Corsa. The work was done to very nice “driver” standard. Upon critical inspection is possible to note several minor flaws, but none would justify immediate refinishing. The chrome shows light weathering in selected areas. The “Targa” top is finished in the correct mat black, and fits well. The desirable Campagnolo wheels have been freshly refinished to nice driver standards. The window glass and emblems are all in good order. This example has been retrofitted with headlamp covers, further accentuating the already beautiful lines of the Dino. The engine bay and underside are clean and functional, although not detailed for show. The trunk is original and in beautiful condition with the rear plastic in good order. The front storage area is in impeccable condition, and is highly correct and complete with unbroken plastic surround, matching Campagnolo spare wheel with XWX tire, battery cover, spare wheel hold down, correct fuse box covers, and even the window washer bag. s/n 07834 runs and drives well. The engine starts easily and makes excellent power. The five-speed transaxle shifts well with good synchros and linkage adjustment. The brakes work well, although the hand brake is not functioning at this time. The A/C blows, but not cold. This is a matching numbers example with no accident history or rust evident. Today the car shows 12,500 miles on the odometer, but the exact mileage from new is not known. Included with the sale are partial tools with roll, the jack kit, and a reproduction owner’s manual. Dinos continue to increase in value as more and more buyers appreciate their blend of enjoyable driving dynamics and stunning lines, making this Dino a sensible buy as both an investment and as something to enjoy.
