The Scirocco is a three-door coupé which underwent two
generations of development between 1974 and 1992 before being
re-introduced for a third generation in August 2008. Volkswagen
began work on the car during the early 1970's as the replacement
for the ageing Karmann Ghia coupé. The platform of the Golf and
Jetta was used to underpin the new Scirocco, although almost every
part of the car was re-engineered in favour of a sportier drive and
the model's all-new styling resulted in a sleeker and sportier car
than either the Golf or Jetta. A heavily re-designed Mk.II
variant went on sale in 1982; a unique feature of which was the
location of the rear spoiler midway up the glass on the rear hatch.
A mid-cycle update occurred in 1984 which included minor changes
over the 1982 model; a redesigned air conditioning compressor, a
modified brake master cylinder with in-line proportioning valves
and a brake light switch mounted to the pedal instead of on the
master cylinder, also a new space-saver spare wheel was added,
which provided room for a larger fuel tank. Leather interior, power
windows and mirrors, air conditioning, and a manual sunroof were
options for all years. As with the first generation Scirocco's, the
car was assembled on behalf of Volkswagen by Karmann of
Osnabrück.
Good example Volkswagen Scirocco's are rare and this being a limited edition 'Storm' model adds to its desirability. With only 600 produced for the UK market in total (300 blue and 300 brown), not only are they hard to find, but fine examples such as this are few and far between. Originally registered on 9th August 1984, this car has been in the same family since 1985 and shows only two previous keepers on the registration document. With a splendid service history and MOT's dating back to 1988, the mileage of 67,420 appears to be genuine and correct. The coachwork benefitted from a re-spray in the original colour a number of years ago due to the original paintwork becoming dull, and the car has been dry stored ever since. Whilst the vendor is reluctant to part with the Scirocco, he recognises the importance of the car and hopes the new owner will cherish and display it at suitable club meetings. Supplied with a V5 registration document, an MOT test certificate valid until 30th August 2013 and benefitting from a recent cambelt change, this is an opportunity to purchase a modern classic, in superb condition, that is sure to appreciate in value.
