According to factory records held by the Dino register and Matthias Bartz author of the book Dino Compendium (ISBN 978-3-9814351-1-5),#0448 was completed on the 5th September 1969- one of only 81 246’s built in 1969,and one of only 355 L series cars built between April 1969 and October 1970 featuring many of the original 206 components ,but with a the 2.4 litre engine. #0448 was originally finished in Blu Dino metallizato 106-A-72 –one of only 255 built in this colour-with beige vinyl 430 interior trim.
Sold directly by the factory to its first owner, American, Mr Evan E Kimble (rumoured to be the Coca Cola heir) and delivered to Germany. The car was however registered on New Jersey licence number UCL 368.It is unclear whether the car ever went to the USA, but did certainly end up in Puerto Andratx, Majorca now metallic green, when it was sold, on the 18th September 1988 , by Mr Kemble for £10,000 to Mr Christopher Joel of Surrey, England. The car cleared English customs at Dover possibly having been driven there, on the 23rd September 1988 were £2,648 car tax and vat was paid.
The car was immediately sent to the respected Ferrari specialist Kevin O’Rourke of Moto technique Ltd of Surrey , where they set about stripping the car to a bare chassis, which was cleaned and shot blasted before applying an anti corrosion primer (all this work is detailed with invoices and colour photographs which show the original Dino Blu paintwork in the door shuts and around the rear window).Over the course of the next year or so the car was COMPLETELY restored, engine-rebored to .05”+- gearbox, brakes , suspension, bodywork and interior trim. The opportunity was taken to convert the car to right hand drive-apparently easily reversible. In all some 1910 hours was spent on the car with another 255 on the engine and gearbox
Interestingly Mr Joel didn’t UK register the car in the UK-Apparently too scared to now use it (It did appear at the 1990 Ferrari Owners Club concours at Brockett Hall, on the registration number CDJ 6, were it scored 369 points-three points behind the winning -Mr Joel also owned a 246 GTS, perhaps that was the number was ALSO on the 246 GTS.A new speedometer was fitted with zero miles (the original item apparently showing 50,000 miles according to Mr Joel)
The penultimate and only the third owner Mr Simon Lees-Milne of Worcestershire bought #0448 from Andrew Turner of then Ferrari agents MHT (Mortimer, Houghton, Turner) of Gloucestershire with 1,982 miles. It was first registered in the UK YPH 112G on the 5th November 1996.Maiantenance continued with MHT and Moto technique with one service by MDL Cars of West Bromwich.
Purchased from Mr Lees-Milne in a by the last owner Mr Adam Taylor of Surrey on the 23rd June 2004 with approximately 15,000 miles , re-registering the car in his wife's name on the on the 25th June 2007.Maintenance and repairs returned to Moto technique Ltd with later works by former Maranello Concessionaires technician, Neil Lucas. The car comes with a comprehensive history tracing it back to its production, copies of past invoices, MOT certificates, and colour photographs, as well as a Marpart reproduction parts book for this series L car .
