The top-of-the-line for Oldsmobile in 1940 when they introduced the revolutionary Hydra-Matic drive, the first fully automatic transmission that set the industry standard for all future automatic transmissions. The Series 90 Custom Cruiser 4 door touring sedan was top-of-the-line for Oldsmobile in 1940. Although it carried a hefty price tag, it was the second best selling Oldsmobile for 1940, with 33,350 built. 1940 also saw Oldsmobile build its 1 millionth vehicle and introduce the revolutionary Hydra-Matic drive, the first fully automatic transmission that set the industry standard for all future automatic transmissions. Hydra-Matic drive, with modifications, had continued usage through 1964 in various GM models.
