The Chrysler Windsor was positioned above the entry-level Chrysler Royal from 1939 to 1950. With the demise of the Royal for the 1951 model year the Windsor became Chrysler's price leader through to 1960. In 1940, the Windsor came in either long or short wheelbase versions as a six passenger saloon, a six passenger coupé, a convertible, a Victoria saloon, or an eight passenger limousine. New for 1941 was the Windsor Six Town and Country saloons and an estate car designed by David A. Wallace who was the president of Chrysler at the time. Fog lights and bumper crash bars were optional with production ending in January, 1942, as all automobile companies in the United States switched to war production. After the war, the Windsor was put back into production. It was similar to the 1942 models and with full instrumentation.
This 1948 Chrysler Windsor was imported to the United Kingdom from Minnesota by Marvel Films for the production of Captain America - The First Avenger, whilst this was not actually used in the filming of Captain America, it was a popular rehearsal car within and around the studios. Purchased by the vendor two years ago, he then proceeded carry out any work that was needed, including removing the engine and fitting new inlet and exhaust valves (the engine is already fitted with hardened valve seats so is suitable for unleaded fuel), a new clutch, a new water pump, a new automatic choke, replacement exhaust manifold and temperature controls, new heater and radiator hoses and a new petrol pump and copper fuel lines The car has also had a new battery and battery cables, a reconditioned dynamo and voltage regulator, new brake master cylinder, new slave cylinders, new brake linings, and all-new copper brake lines, the suspension has had new shock absorbers, new spring shackle bushes and new steering ball joints. This now completely revived example is in excellent condition and completely original apart from the paint which was attended to some years ago in the correct original dark blue colour. The original valve radio still works as do the twin heaters. The engine is the original six-cylinder C38 with the original Fluid Drive semi-automatic four-speed gearbox. All numbers match. Even the interior cloth upholstery and carpets are in very good, original condition. Mileage is about 77,000 which, the vendor believes, is genuine. This car is supplied with a V5C registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in September 2013, The original Minnesota title documents, an owners manual, a workshop manual and a certificate of authenticity by Marvel Studios confirming its involvement in the filming of Captain America- The First Avenger.
