The M189 debuted in the fourth Grand Prix of 1989, in Mexico. The M188B version of the previous year’s car having appeared in the first three races. Drivers for the season were Luis Perez-Sala and Pierluigi Martini. The Cosworth DFR provided the power and Pirelli the tyres.
