The single-minded mission of a dedicated individual exhibits itself frequently in sheetmetal, and this 1971 Chevelle SS is an excellent example. Beautifully finished, it demonstrates a level of unity and consistency throughout that's truly impressive, giving it a mild custom look that becomes more interesting the longer you look at it. The first impression you get when you see this Chevelle is that it looks sleek. Not just clean, but as if the wind had peeled off all the unnecessary stuff. Maybe it's the icy Atlantic Blue paint and the cowl induction hood, but this car just looks fast standing still. Whoever did the bodywork took their time and got it right, because it's straight and expertly finished with a fantastic gloss to the two-stage paint. There's a blacked-out grille up front, complete with SS emblems, but otherwise the bodywork is unadorned save for Chevelle script on the deck lid, just in case nobody recognizes the four round taillights. All the chrome is nicely finished, too, adding to the car's brilliant presentation that will attract a lot of fans out on the show field as well as on the highway. The bottom line? This sucker looks amazing! They went the extra mile inside, too, where you'll find a fully reupholstered bucket seat interior. And those aren't just vinyl seat covers from your favorite repro supplier; no, those are genuine leather skins stitched together just for this car, giving it a luxurious look and feel that other Chevelles can only envy. Matching door panels were done at the same time, incorporating the stock armrest and SS emblems so onlookers will have a hard time knowing what's OEM and what's custom. You'll also note power windows and A/C are part of the deal, making this an A-body you can drive every day without feeling like you're stepping back 40 years. The dash has been color-matched to the bodywork, there are matching blue carpets, and, of course, the coolest shifter in the universe manages the TH350 3-speed automatic underneath. Fresh gauges were fitted in the dash and are supplied with readings by new sending units, and a Kenwood AM/FM/CD stereo with a 1600 watt amplifier fills the interior with sound. The trunk is neatly trimmed in the original style with a new mat and spare tire cover. With a trusty 350 cubic inch small block under the hood, performance is lively. It's neatly dressed, too, with a bit of chrome, a modern serpentine accessory drive system, and a high-rise intake that helps build torque. With an .030 overbore, it now displaces 355 cubic inches which cackle and snarl through a pair of long-tube headers and a new dual exhaust system with polished tips. The A/C system features new hoses, condenser, and dryer with an electric fan that maintains airflow when you need it most. Out back, 2.73 gears mean that highway cruising is comfortable, and while it isn't detailed for show, this car is impressively solid and clean underneath. Lowering springs give it that wicked stance, and polished Foose wheels wearing 245/45/18 front and 255/45/20 radials stuff the wheelwells.
