The 4/4 was a step-change for Morgan in that it had four wheels (not counting the steering wheel!) rather than three. This Coventry Climax engined car has been the subject of what must have been a no expense spared chassis up restoration and has to be one of the best of its type available anywhere!
Its file includes a CD containing pictures showing the restoration in progress and also a valuation report written at the time by a company specialising in inspecting collectable cars for insurance purposes. This records that the car had a new chassis; a new radiator and water hoses; a reconditioned engine, gearbox and rear axle; all new exterior body panels and wings; a new hood, side screens and tonneau cover; new carpets and seat covers; new dashboard with all instruments in working condition.
The report which was written some 16 years ago concludes by saying that the car had been restored to an extremely high standard. I am happy to confirm that it has been maintained to the same level since that time, its exceptional condition being no doubt helped by the fact that the MoT certificates dating from the completion of the restoration show that it has covered just over 1,000 miles since it was put back on the road in 1996.
Furthermore just prior to me being asked to sell it the car has been checked over by a well-established firm which specialises in the restoration and maintenance of vintage and classic cars so it is ready for immediate use on the road.
Its successful combination of traditional Morgan character, purposeful looks and peppy Coventry-Climax engine makes it a very desireable sports car which offers lively performance and real seat of the pants roadholding - all the features which make a modern Morgan such an attractive proposition. It is also quite rare when compared with other small sports cars of the 1930s and you get the same appeal of individuality and hand-built exclusivity the Morgan marque still offers today.
Given its condition whoever buys this car will be able to experience what it must have felt like to drive a new 4/4 back in 1937!
P.S As well as an old buff card continuation log book dating from 1960 the file includes an original Morgan Four Wheeler Workshop Manual.
